Tara Corbett (she/her), MSW, LCSWA, MTS

Outpatient Psychotherapist in South Durham

Works with ages 18+

Hi! I’m Tara (rhymes with Sara, she/her pronouns). I’m an outpatient psychotherapist at the Three Oaks South Durham office. I’m glad you’re considering therapy! While it’s not always easy, it can lead to powerful healing. Here’s a bit about me:

After studying psychology and Spanish at Elon University (plus a couple of gap years), I pursued my Master’s in Social Work at UNC Chapel Hill. I then went to Duke Divinity School where I completed the Fellowship in Theology, Medicine, and Culture and graduated with my Master’s in Theological Studies.

Since graduate school, my work has addressed intimate partner violence, sexual assault, and reproductive rights. I have experience in crisis intervention, hospital accompaniment, client advocacy, peer counseling, and trauma-informed program development. In addition to my role at Three Oaks, I also address abortion stigma and mental health with Exhale Pro-Voice.

As a therapist, I work with adults who’ve experienced religious trauma, shame, or guilt, particularly as it relates to reproduction, sex and sexuality, and gender. I also address medical trauma and collective trauma (for example, the effects of COVID-19 or systemic harms), as well as interpersonal challenges, grief, and academic stressors.

When invited and appropriate, my work has involved an interfaith, spiritual, or Christian-specific lens, always in service to my anti-racist, queer- and trans-affirming, abortion-supportive, and other anti-oppressive commitments. I am happy to explore a lens like this if you are interested.

I am first and foremost person-centered and focused on co-creating a strong therapeutic relationship in my clinical work. The main frameworks I pull from are Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Motivational Interviewing (MI).

When not working, you can find me reading, doing jigsaw puzzles, nerding out on movies, and spending quality time with my spouse, two rescue pitties, and other loved ones. If you think we’d be a good fit or have questions about my approach, please reach out. I’d love to connect and help you find a great therapist match, whether that’s me or someone else!
