Josh Friedman (he/him), PhD, LCSWA

Outpatient Psychotherapist in South Durham

Works with individuals and couples, 18+

My name is Josh Friedman (he/him) and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker Associate here at Three Oaks. I am a therapist because I love supporting people as they work to better understand themselves. Therapy is where you can grow comfortable with all the parts of yourself—even those that may feel the hardest to show. Understanding those parts can help us build compassion, connection, and the strength to face life’s challenges.

I am passionate about working with clients on relationship issues, life-transitions, identity exploration, anxiety, depression, attachment, gender and sexuality, loss and grief. While I love supporting people from many different backgrounds and walks of life, I am especially drawn to work with men, parents, and people navigating conflict in romantic relationships. I also love supporting academics confronting the emotional challenges of their work. In session, I am committed to close-listening, offering a space where you can feel safe, supported, and brave. My approach is relational and strengths-based, drawing on Internal Family Systems, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, as well as feminist, queer, ethnographic, and anti-racist theory. I completed an MSW at UNC-Chapel Hill, and I also hold a PhD. in Cultural Anthropology from the University of Michigan.

In my free time, I love to bike, cook, and spend time with my family. I am also deeply committed to buffalo wings and ice cream.
