Bekah Shimer (she/her), MEd, LCMHCA

Outpatient Psychotherapist in North Durham

Works with ages 14+

Hi! My name is Bekah (she/her), and I’m a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Associate. I earned my Master of Education in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from NC State University. First, I want to acknowledge the courage and strength it takes to start therapy. I’m so happy you’re here.

I strive to make my office a place where you can come exactly as you are and know that you are seen, heard, and supported. My view of therapy is rooted in collaboration, compassion, safety, and curiosity. Therapy is a profoundly personal process, and I honor each person’s unique journey. I use an integrative approach that is first and foremost grounded in the therapeutic relationship and is informed by Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Narrative Therapy, and Feminist Theory. I believe in working together to create a plan that feels right for you.

I am deeply passionate about working with folks seeking to unpack experiences of religious harm and spiritual abuse, as well as individuals who are exploring their spiritual identity. I’ve experienced firsthand how isolating and confusing re-evaluating long-held belief systems can be, and I would love to support you as you identify what holds meaning for you and create a life that aligns with your values. I also enjoy working with adults and adolescents on topics including LGBTQ+, ADHD/autism, identity, self-esteem, life transitions, relationships, stress, depression, inner child work, and trauma.

I am queer-affirming and welcome individuals of all cultures, races, ethnicities, religions, and abilities. You are accepted, affirmed, and celebrated here.

In my spare time, I enjoy taking walks outside, building lego sets, playing cozy video games, going to concerts, and spending time with my two cats, Mo and Zuko.
